UPDATE INFORMATION FOR
BasicMenu v1.05
First Time Installation:
───────────────────────
Make it easy on yourself. Run INSTALL.EXE that came in the archive.
It'll let you stick BasicMenu in any directory on any hard drive on your
system. It'll also add whatever directory and drive that turns out to be to
your autoexec.bat PATH (or SET PATH) statement, then, it'll offer to
re-boot your computer to make all the changes current. It works. Trust me.
If you have something against installation programs, then create a
directory for BasicMenu (doesn't matter where), and copy everything in the
archive to that directory (don't need INSTALL.EXE, in that case). Add your
new directory to your PATH (or SET PATH) statement, reboot your machine,
and type BMENU to get things rolling.
Updating an older version:
─────────────────────────
If you're updating an older version of BasicMenu, DON'T run the install
program! It'll replace your BMENU.CFG file! Instead, manually copy the
following files into your BasicMenu directory:
BMENU.EXE
BMENU.HLP
BMENU.DOC
That's all there is to it.
Operations:
──────────
Nope. I won't go into that here, except to say that a child could (and
frequently does) operate this program. Read BMENU.DOC for details. And
check out the online help too. You can access it from the Main Menu by
pressing 'H' or 'h'. It'll tell you everything you need to know.
What's New in v1.05:
───────────────────
Added a (S)hell to DOS function from the Main Menu or from any
sub-menu screen. This was done largely to give users the chance to
check filespecs for validity before (or even after) adding new
programs to their sub-menus. Added (H)elp function to sub-menus.
Also fixed bug that caused runtime error if user entered a blank
when prompted for filename for new sub-menu. Added full error checking on
all user inputs when entering data for new programs. BasicMenu now checks
that the path (drive:\path) entered by the user is valid, then further
checks the entire filespec (drive:\path\filename.ext) to make sure it exists
where the user says it does. It's also no longer necessary to add the colon
after the drive letter, nor precede the path with the DOS "CD" command.
BasicMenu will add both of these if needed. In addition, BasicMenu now
requires the full filename for a new program, including the extension. This
is so that BasicMenu will know HOW to run the program when it is called for.
For instance, if the extension on a particular program is .BAT, BasicMenu
will run that program with the CALL command, automatically. Also added some
great graphics routines, seen throughout the program. Finally, added some
limited mouse support. Verification boxes that appear (when deleting a
program or sub-menu, or when exiting BasicMenu), in addition to any error
messages that may be displayed, now have full mouse support. This mouse
support is the main reason for the program's dramatic increase in size since
the previous version, from approx. 80K to over 110K.
Bug Reports:
───────────
Please send any bug reports (I don't think there ARE any, but one never
knows!) to: <schiele@inetdirect.net> (no, don't type the '<>' in the
address). I can't promise I'll update the program again, but I may. If
you're having trouble figuring it out (can't imagine that), I'll do what I
can to set you straight.
Future Versions:
───────────────
Quite frankly, I don't think so. After all, I only wrote the thing so
I'd have a good, reliable menu program for my own system. It already does
the things I want it to do, and does them well. But again, one can never
tell. If I get the urge to try out some new programming technique or other,
I just might take a stab at it someday.
Distribution:
────────────
You can give this software to anybody you want to so long as you
haven't fooled around with the code by disassembling or whatever, so long
as the archive you received is intact when you pass it along to the next
person. Feel free to upload it to BBS's and so on if you want.
Money (Renumeration):
────────────────────
Not necessary. This sucker is freeware. You're automatically licensed
to run it on as many computers as you want, for as long as you want. If
you're feeling particularly generous and want to send me some email telling
me what you think of the program, that'll be quite sufficient. If you
don't, no sweat. I won't hold it against you.
Disclaimer:
──────────
BasicMenu is provided AS IS. Absolutely no claim is made as to it's
applicability or anything else whatever except that it WILL take up about
100K of space on your hard drive. I've tested it to the best of my ability,
and I honestly don't think it can possibly screw your system up, but you're
the one taking the risk. If it eats your hard drive, you've been warned.
